Recife

Recife is the ninth most populous Brazilian city and encompasses the fifth largest metropolitan region in the country. It is located in the northeastern State of Pernambuco and one of the most prominent economic and business centers in the region. 

Recife is a flat city, situated at approximately 2.5 to 5 meters above sea level. Consequently, even a rising tide can lead to flooding, particularly in coastal areas. Due to its geographical and social distribution, with low-income populations residing high-risk areas, Recife places considerable emphasis on prevention and mitigation activities.

In Recife, several legislations guide risk and disaster management at the local level. The Sustainability and Climate Change Policy and the Climate Risk and Vulnerability Analysis and Adaptation Strategy are two crucial strategies to highlight. 

Together with Recife’s Local Plan of Climate Action and the ongoing development of the Sectoral Adaptation Plan, resilience across sectors of mobility, sanitation and energy will be further strengthened.
