Porto Alegre

Porto Alegre, home to around 1.5 million people, is the capital and the largest city of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil. Located in the junction of five rivers, the city is a port of industrial and commercial centers. However, this geographical location also exposes the city to floods during the annual rainy season.

The city has been mobilizing projects in partnership with national and international institutions focusing on disaster prevention and mitigation with a focus on public participation.

Local risk management strategies

The city has a Civil Defence and Protection System to reduce the impact of disasters, from prevention to recovery. Porto Alegre has formed a working group of academic institutions, government officials, and residents to develop an Urban Resilience Strategy that identifies areas of greatest risks and enhances public awareness.
